SWANTON, Vt. -

The former chief of a Vermont Abenaki tribe is facing embezzlement charges.

April St. Francis Merrill, 44, of Highgate, has been cited into court next week.

Swanton police say they were contacted by the Abenaki Tribal Council in regards to embezzlement. Police say the investigation was conducted over a couple of months before the citation was issued.

A year ago St. Francis-Merrill was charged with exploitation for allegedly stealing $30,000 from an elderly man she was caring for. Those charges were later dropped.

Merrill was the head of the Sokoki band of the Abenaki in Swanton.
