SWANTON, Vt. -

A former Abenaki chief has denied charges that she embezzled $35,000 from the tribe.

Police say April St. Francis Merrill, 44, stole the money through ATM withdrawals and used the cash for grocery shopping, flower purchases and putting a deck on her home.

Police say the money came from a Christmas charity fund set up to benefit children.
