Vermont Yankee nuke plant at 36% power

Posted: Updated:

VERNON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon is operating at 36 percent of its peak power after an electrical failure in a generator that regulates the flow of reactor cooling water.

The plant that failed was one of two. The second generator is operating normally.

Output was reduced at 1 p.m.

In a statement, the plant says the electrical failure produced some smoke in the reactor building and operators took precautions in temporarily restricting access.

Plant technicians are in the process of investigating the cause and the plant will remain at reduced power until repairs are completed.

Technicians are working to determine the cause of the failure.
