Upper Jay firehouse may move

Posted: Updated:
UPPER JAY, N.Y. -

The Upper Jay Fire Department may be moving to higher ground. It was heavily damaged during Tropical Storm Irene; the building sustained heavy damage, gear washed away and so did most of the outside training facility.

The town was at odds with its insurance company over damage estimates.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo negotiated a deal and the town will now receive $900,000 from the insurance company and now possibly FEMA.

The fire station sits along the Ausable River and has been flooded numerous times, but during Irene equipment was washed away.

Building a new firehouse on higher ground is expected to cost close to $2 million.

"Yes it could be rebuilt there for less cost, but you still have it in the possibility of being in another flood, and it's in the 100-year flood plain," said Randy Douglas, D-Jay Town Supervisor.

One possible location for a new firehouse is on three-acre site across from the town highway garage.
