ValleyCats Bring the Bats

Austin Elkins went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and Vincent Velasquez allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings as the Tri-City ValleyCats spoiled the Vermont Lake Monster season opener at historic Centennial Field with a 10-2 New York-Penn League victory on Monday night.

The ValleyCats led 1-0 when they scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning off Vermont reliever Deyvi Jimenez, capped off by Elkins three-run homer to rightfield. Tri-City added three more runs in the top of the sixth, including a two-out double off the bat of Jobduan Morales, for an 8-0 advantage.

The Lake Monsters scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a run-scoring fielding error and RBI single from Miguel Marte, who had two hits on the night. Rhett Stafford and John Wooten both had two hits for Vermont, which was out hit 11-7 by the ValleyCats. Lake Monster starter Julio Ramos (0-1) gave up one run on three hits over the first three innings to take the loss.

Five Tri-City batters each had two hits on the night, while Elkins, Andrew Aplin and Emilo King each scored two runs. Velasquez (1-0) walked none and struck out six over his five scoreless innings for the victory.

The loss was Vermont's first in a home opener since 2006 after five straight wins, dropping the Lake Monsters to 9-10 in home openers in their 19-year history. Vermont is also now 7-12 all-time in season openers.
