ST. ALBANS, Vt. -
A rail line in northern Vermont is getting a big upgrade.
An $8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will be used to install new rail, ballast and ties on the New England Central Railroad between St. Albans and the Canadian border.
Six bridges will also undergo major repairs.
The improvements are also being made to try to accelerate efforts to expand passenger rail service to Montreal.
Amtrak currently ends service in St. Albans.
