WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -
A historic day for animals in our region, at least when it comes to pets in the Green Mountain State.
The Vermont Spay Neuter Incentive Program (VSNIP) signed its 18,000th voucher Wednesday morning.
The program allows low-income pet owners in Vermont to spay, neuter and vaccinate their animals at a low cost.
Administrators of the program say it's all about doing what's best for the animal population as a whole.
"Animals have been a passion all my life and know that routinely they are euthanized just as a means of population control, it was driving me crazy years ago. I said we need to do something about it and this evolved," said Sue Skaskiw of VSNIP.
Vermont's program is modeled after New Hampshire's which has seen a 75 percent decrease in euthanized animals as a result.
