A former Vermont prosecutor is in jail in Arizona for bilking people out of hundreds of thousands.
Gary Karpin was an Orleans County Deputy State's Attorney 20 years ago. The Barton Chronicle says he left the prosecutor's office and soon after was disbarred for defrauding clients in his private practice. Now investigators in Arizona say that did not stop him from preying on people. Karpin is serving a 15-year jail sentence there, where he claimed to be a divorce attorney.
"He just plain and blatantly ripped people off to his advantage, and what happened to those other people he could care less about," said fraud victim Clissy Christiano.
It's taken authorities four years to track down Karpin's assets. Now, they are in the process of distributing the money to victims.
