Four games against teams that advanced to postseason play and five home contests highlight the 2012-13 University of Vermont men's basketball non-conference schedule that was announced today.
The reigning America East Champions open the year with a pair of home preseason contests starting on October 27 when they face cross-town rival Saint Michael's. UVM's second home preseason tune-up will take place on November 3 when it hosts Concordia from Montreal, Quebec.
The Catamounts open the 2012-13 regular season with three straight on the road, starting with a trip to Albany, N.Y. to face Siena on November 9. The Cats used a tip-in just before the buzzer last season to top the Saints at home. Vermont is at Connecticut on November 13 to face the Huskies, who are just two years removed from winning the NCAA Championship. UConn went 20-14 and made the NCAA Tournament last season, as the two teams last met just two years ago. UVM wraps up the three-game road swing to kick off the year at former America East rival Northeastern (Nov. 17).
The Cats will play their regular season home opener on November 21 when they host Yale. The Bulldogs finished 19-10 last season and played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Vermont faces another NCAA team from last year when it is at Harvard on November 27. The Crimson won the Ivy League Championship last season and finishing 26-5 overall and 11-1 at home. The Catamounts will also have a road contest at Atlantic-10 member Rhode Island on December 1, before finishing off the non-conference slate with four of their last six at home. The game against the Rams will mark the first time the two New England schools have met since the 2003-04 season.
On December 5 UVM will host another former league foe in Towson. Vermont will square off with its fourth different opponent that made postseason play last year when it travels to Quinnipiac on December 8. The Bobcats are coming off an 18-14 campaign and a trip to the College Basketball Invitational. The Cats will also host Dartmouth in the 97th career meeting between the two schools on December 12.
The Catamounts will play the return game as part of the ESPN BracketBusters Series from last year when they travel to face Niagara on December 16. Vermont closes out non-conference play with home contests vs. Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 22) and Charleston (Dec. 29). Charleston went 19-12 last season and will be making its first-ever trip to Patrick Gym as part of a return game from the BracketBusters meeting two seasons ago.
Vermont won the America East Championship for the fifth time in the last 10 years when it knocked off top seed Stony Brook on the road last season. The Catamounts (24-12) advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they topped Lamar for only their second-ever NCAA victory, before falling to No. 1 North Carolina.
