Vt could end year with surplus

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

After tax revenues surged above expectations, Vermont could end the year with a small surplus-- around $4 million-$10 million.

That extra money will go toward helping rebuild the state office complex after damage by Tropical Storm Irene.

Administration Secretary Jeb Spaulding says overall it looks like the financial picture for the state is slowly starting to improve.

"Whereas this year the increase in revenues were in the range of 3 percent, the economists are predicting above 5 percent for next year. So as we sit right here-- and it could be revised in the middle of this coming month-- we are actually looking to have a moderate improvement in revenues coming into the state and that will be very useful for sure," Spaulding said.

Key lawmakers and the governor will meet with the state's economists next month to get an update on state finances.
