RICHMOND, Vt. -
The Huntington Gorge claimed the life of a 24-year-old Saturday.
Crews were called to the popular swimming area just after noon.
According to police, Rudolf Kiburis of Burlington, was swimming with friends when he was swept up by swift currents in the notoriously dangerous swimming area. Rescue crews from the Richmond police department, fire department, Vermont State Police, and Colchester Technical Rescue, performed CPR for more than 30 minutes on the victim.
Rick Greenough of the Richmond Police Dept said Saturday, "I think the lesson is unfortunately one we've heard over and over again at this particular swimming hole. It's an incredibly dangerous place, the tides, currents in the water are totally unpredictable, sadly today's tragic event highlights that."
More than 25 deaths have occurred at the Huntington Gorge in the last forty years.
