ESSEX, Vt. -
Hundreds teamed up to SLAM diabetes in Essex Saturday.
The wiffleball tournament, held at little Wrigley and little Fenway in Essex, is raising thounsands of dollars to fight the disease.
Proceeds will fund camp scholarships for children with diabetes as well as research.
SLAM Diabetes founder Jeff Kolok says the tournament aims to spread understanding of type one diabetes.
"I'd say 60-70 percent of the people here are coming to this event without a previous awareness or clear understanding of Type 1 diabetes and so they're coming here to play wiffleball, been a lot of fun, and in the mean time learn a little bit about a lethal auto-immune disease that does take lives and is very difficult to manage." shares Kolok.
Kolok says the event's success last year led them to schedule five tournaments like this one across New England.
This year, the slam raised 24-thousand dollars, beating last year's mark of 16-thousand.
