ESSEX, Vt. -
A house on Route 117 in Essex went up in flames Monday in an outdoor cooking accident.
The homeowner says he left a small propane camp stove unattended near the back of his home for a short time. When he returned, the exterior wall was burning and the flames quickly spread into the attic area. By the time firefighters arrived the flames had engulfed the home. It is considered a total loss.
"It's like an open attic all the way through and once it got caught up in that dry stuff, it was like whoosh, all the way through," homeowner Jake Tardie said.
Tardie suffered a slight burn while trying to fight the flames.
