Mental health counselors may assist police

Mental health counselors may soon help Vermont police with emergency situations.

The state's department of mental health is stepping up efforts to collaborate with law enforcement following the death of a 39-year-old Thetford man two weeks ago.

Macadam Mason died after he was tased by a State trooper. Mason had called a hospital crisis line shortly before the incident to say he was suicidal.

The goal is to have a mental health counselors respond to emergency situations like the one in Thetford along with police.
