JOHNSON, Vt. -
Several pets were killed Tuesday in an
apartment fire in Johnson.
The fire was discovered at about 7
a.m. Arriving firefighters found a ground-floor apartment fully ablaze. The
tenant was not home. Her two dogs were rescued, but several cats and reptiles
died in the fire.
All the occupants of the other four
apartments got out safely, thanks in part to the construction materials in the
building.
"One thing that
helped this building is it has five-eighths fire-proof sheet rock, so the fire
did not have a chance to get into the other apartments. That was a major help
to our firefighters, very important," Johnson Fire Chief Gordon Smith
said.
Vermont State police fire investigators were
called in to determine the cause of the fire. They believe it was the result of
something being left burning on the stove.
