Chemical leak closes Burlington bike path

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Burlington bike path is open again following a chemical leak.

Leddy Park visitors noticed a strong odor coming from the hockey arena just after noon Wednesday. Firefighters traced the problem to an exterior valve leaking ammonia.

Emergency responders evacuated the arena, closed the bike path, and told nearby homeowners to close their windows.

Ammonia is used to regulate and cool the temperature of the ice rink at the facility.

"Patrons near Leddy Park heard the incident and called it in by phone. There was actually no alarm within the building itself that had gone off. They do have sensors inside the building. None of those did trip, that's because of the way the pressure leak system works... it expels the gas outside and above the building," Burlington Fire Lt. D.J. Rousseau said.

The repairs have been completed and the facilities are back open to the public. No one was injured in the incident.

The Leddy Park beach did not need to be evacuated because the wind blew fumes away from the area.
