ST. ALBANS, Vt. -
A deal has been reached to restructure the St. Albans Fire Department, clearing the way for approval of a new union contract for the city's municipal employees.
The tentative deal covers about 40 people and includes pay raises of 1 percent this year and 1.5 percent each of the next two years.
The contact was held up because the city wanted to eliminate around-the-clock staffing at the fire station. The three full-time lieutenants who worked those shifts resisted, but now one has taken a job in another community and the other two will accept severance packages.
