Search to resume for missing kayaker in NH

Posted: Updated:

HINSDALE, N.H. (AP) - Authorities will resume their search for a kayaker last seen on the Connecticut River near the Vernon Dam.

State and local officials will begin searching again Friday morning for 57-year-old Thomas Howell of Hinsdale. Howell was last seen at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday swimming alongside his kayak not far from shore. Witnesses say within minutes, he disappeared from sight in an area with a strong current.

Divers from fire departments in Brattleboro, Vt., Northfield, Mass., searched for Howell, along with state conservation officers and the state marine patrol. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's dive team will return to the river on Friday.

Officials say alcohol could be a contributing factor.
