Tragedy in Newport

NEWPORT, Vt. -

Rescue crews responded to the harbor in Newport around 6 o'clock. According to police-- a boater who was tied up to a mooring ball-- jumped into the lake in an attempt to retrieve a smaller boat.

"We had a couple of gentlemen out on a sailboat and a canoe got loose from the sailboat. And one of them jumped in after it. And we don't know if he had a physical condition or what, but he went under and his friend couldn't retrieve him," said Chief Duquette of Newport Police Department.

Multiple department responded including dive teams from the state police. Police were able to recover the body. The victim has been identified as 58-year-old John Connell of Calais.
