RUTLAND TOWN, Vt. -
A fire in Rutland Town closed several businesses Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze started atop the roof of the Green Mountain Plaza shopping center. Adhesive holding new roofing tiles somehow caught fire and quickly spread. Smoke filled several stores including Petco, Radio Shack, and Jo-Ann Fabric, all of which were evacuated.
Officials say the fire was quickly put out thanks to a fast thinking off-duty firefighter who was on duty at his second job at Radio Shack. Officials say the man grabbed as many fire extinguishers as he could find, climbed to the roof and put out the flames. No word yet on what caused the adhesive to catch fire.
