Testing every Vermonter for HIV

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen got an HIV test on camera Tuesday.

Chen says he thinks it's important to walk the walk when it comes to HIV awareness. He wants all Vermonters to get tested. He says it takes 11 years for someone with HIV to begin showing symptoms of a disease.

More than 30 clinics statewide offer free, anonymous testing, and Chen says if you have insurance the testing should be covered.

"In my mind we're close to the finish line when it comes to this epidemic in Vermont at least. We may never get there but it certainly would be a shame not to take advantage of getting that last piece," Chen said.

Tests can either be administered by drawing blood and sending a sample for testing or by swabbing a patient's mouth for three minutes.
