Vermont survey finds 2,148 job openings

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The state says there are a lot of good jobs open in Vermont, but not enough qualified people to fill them. So the Vermont Labor Department announced a new initiative aimed at bringing young Vermonters back to the state.

Labor Department Commissioner Annie Noonan asked two interns to conduct a telephone survey asking companies if they were hiring. They found more than 2,000 private sector salaried jobs are currently vacant around the state. Most jobs are in the health sector or are sales-related.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says he wants to reach out to Vermonters who've left the state and advertise these positions.

"This is good news for our employers and our economy. We feel we need to do a better job matching our employers who have jobs with Vermonters who need jobs," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

The initiative called "Bring it Home to Vermont" will be live on the Labor Dept. website in the coming months.
