BURLINGTON, Vt. -
The Vermont Health Department is testing Burlington beaches for toxic algae.
Burlington Parks and Rec Department got a report from an employee and a beach-goer of something strange in the water. Health inspectors were contacted.
They're testing areas around North Beach, including Leddy Beach.
Test results are not in yet. But if blue-green algae is detected too close to the beaches, they will be closed.
Light winds and warm temperatures increase algae blooms, which can irritate skin, make people sick if swallowed and can kill pets.
