RUTLAND, Vt. -
Hundreds of people in Rutland were diving, sliding, and splashing in the mud Sunday.
The 19th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament is a benefit for the Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont and included 43 teams and over 400 participants. Hundreds of spectators also braved the heat to cheer on the teams. The event raised more than 11-thousand dollars for the Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont to help bring more awareness about the neurological disorder that causes seizures.
"My goal is to let people know that the people that have epilepsy are the same as everybody else, and don't be afraid of it. And I think too many people do fear that and I think there's just a lack of knowledge. There's a stigmatism, of 'oh no, you're epileptic' and you don't know what that means, so that's what we're out here to do -- to teach people that it's not really anything to be afraid of.
The foundation aims to educate teachers, parents, and first responders on how to better help those with epilepsy.
