Vt GOP official sorry for Obama Facebook post

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A county Republican Party committee chairman in Vermont is apologizing for a statement he reposted on Facebook that was widely interpreted as a racist attack on President Barack Obama.

Rutland County committee chairman Rob Towle now says the post was stupid and insensitive. On Monday, he apologized to Democrats he said were offended by the post. A day later, he was directing his apology to everyone.

The original post talked about a "2012 Social Security Stimulus Package" that included cornbread mix, discount coupons to Kentucky Fried Chicken and a prayer rug.

State Democratic Party Chairman Jake Perkinson has called the post "appalling" and "vile."

Towle says he first reposted the message, written by someone else, to the county GOP Facebook page on Sunday.
