A new development in the bizarre disappearance of an Essex couple. WCAX News has learned that investigators have ended their search for evidence at a Northeast Kingdom landfill.
The mystery into Bill and Lorraine Currier's disappearance may finally be unraveling more than a year after they went missing. Sources close to the investigation say state and federal authorities have shut down the dig, and we're told that Friday they will announce the couple was murdered.
Bill and Lorraine Currier vanished from their Essex home last June. Their car turned up abandoned at a nearby apartment complex the next day. Nearly a dozen ground searches covered several square miles around the couple's home before investigators got a tip that helped them zero in on another Essex property in April. A home had recently been knocked down there. Investigators chased that construction debris to the Coventry landfill -- where they had been digging for the last 10 weeks.
Federal authorities are planning a press conference to update the public Friday at 11 a.m.
Thursday, federal authorities remained very tight-lipped about the dig. They would not confirm whether they found any remains or other evidence. And they would not say whether they have a suspect. However, we are told authorities plan to release significant details at Friday's press conference.
