Young musicians learn from a famous flutist

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

With an intense schedule and hands-on training, the month-long Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington is where the future of classical music resides.

The chamber program for string musicians has 135 students who come from 45 states and eight countries. All month long the groups rehearse and perform throughout the community.

"You have these leaps forward in your musicianship personality and your sense in the world through programs like this," Eugenia Zukerman said.

Zukerman should know-- the world-renowned flutist and long-time CBS Sunday Morning arts correspondent has interviewed musicians from Yo-Yo Ma to Paul McCartney and has visited music festivals all over the world.

"People need music," Zukerman said. "It's like our heartbeat. We have to hear it."

Zukerman is in Vermont for the week producing a vlog-- or video blog-- on the event.

"It raises visibility for the organization," she said. "It makes patrons perk up and say that's interesting and it brings information about the festival."

And of course, she will be performing.

Reporter Gina Bullard: You're a world-renowned musician. Do you think these kids are intimidated to be playing with you?

Eugenia Zukerman: Oh, goodness no. Half of them are too young to know who I am.

This festival is about love of classical music.

"The arts give us so much; they reflect who we are and what we can become," Zukerman said.

Kids who could be the future stars of classical music finding their inner harmony together.

Eugenia Zukerman is performing in the festival's season finale performance Friday night at 7:30. Click here for more information on the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival.
