CSWD to inspect gardens contaminated by compost

Posted: Updated:
WILLISTON, Vt. -

The Chittenden Solid Waste District will inspect the gardens of 450 customers who bought contaminated compost.

The district's composting operation, called Green Mountain Compost, determined last month that the soil it sold this spring was tainted with traces of herbicides-- enough to hinder the growth of gardens.

Over the next two weeks, technicians trained in plant pathology will be visiting customers to determine the extent of the damage to vegetables and flowers grown in the tainted soil. The district will use that information to determine how customers will be compensated for their lost produce.
