KEENE VALLEY, N.Y. -
The site of a landslide in the Adirondacks is serving as classroom for teachers.
Geologists say the landslide on Porter Mountain in Keene Valley that began a year ago is about a mile long and covers 82 acres -- The largest ever in New York. It has destroyed one home, forced another family to move and threatens other structures.
Each summer the New York State Museum holds an annual earth science workshop --- typically in Albany. But with the landslide in Keene still moving, the teachers took a field trip to the Adirondacks this year.
"We give them the actual data that we have collected and they are incorporating it into lab exercises for their classrooms, photographs and slides and they can take it all back to the classroom and incorporate it into state of the art teaching materials for their classes," explained Andy Kozlowski, the New York State Museum Geologist.
About two dozen teachers from around the state participated.
