BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Vermont Attorney general Bill Sorrell says there's no questioning his Democratic credentials, despite Saturday's snub by the state Democratic Party.
Sorrell is a 15 year incumbent who's been elected as a Democrat seven times. He faces a primary challenge by fellow Democrat T.J. Donovan. But this weekend, the State Democratic Committee voted not to endorse Sorrell's re-election campaign. He needed 19 votes, but fell short with 16 votes. He told WCAX-TV the result could end up having a positive impact on the campaign.
"There was early polling that Channel 3 did some time ago that had me way up and I think a lot of my supporters thought that, oh -- I'm a shoe-in and I don't really need help. Well, this shows that there is opposition out there and it's real opposition and I hope my supporters take it seriously," Sorrell said.
Some members of the state committee were upset that Sorrell did not do more to seek their support and used a non-union printer for some campaign materials. The company was owned by Sorrell's late brother-in-law.
The primary is scheduled for August 28th.
