West Stewartstown marks 1 year since Celina Cass vanished

WEST STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. -

"I wept very bad last night," Adam Laro said.

Celina Cass' father says the past year has been difficult. The only time Adam Laro sees his daughter is when he visits her grave.

"I don't like the word hell, but that's what it feels like," he said.

It was exactly one year ago that Celina Cass was reported missing. The 11-year-old vanished from her home in the middle of the night.

Debbie Whelan, a family friend, reported the young girl missing to police after Celina's sister stopped by her house the next morning to ask Whelan if she had seen Celina.

"It seems like just yesterday we were all out with a picture of Celina and knocking on doors and driving and asking if anyone had seen her," Whelan said.

But it was a tragic ending to six days of searching. Police found the young girl's body in the Connecticut River about a quarter mile from her home.

"I was fishing right up there on that bridge," Maurs Jalbert said.

Jalbert, a resident of West Stewartstown for 83 years, remembers the day well. He was fishing just a few feet from where Celina's body was found. He recalls police waving him out of the area.

"That week, I was fishing on that rock, she was right below me in the river," he said.

A year later, the young girl's murder is unsolved.

"It is certainly not a cold case," N.H. Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said.

Prosecutors say the case remains a top priority and significant resources are still devoted to it. Three state police detectives are assigned to work on the case full time with the assistance of the FBI and weekly meetings are held. Investigators would not comment on whether they have any suspects.

"There are a bunch of factors that go into why some cases are more crippled than others," Young said. "Celina was found in a body of water, not challenges we can't overcome, but that poses challenges."

A candlelight vigil is planned for 7 p.m.
