BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A new transit center means some changes to Burlington's downtown.

After nine years and 37 proposed locations, the Chittenden County Transportation Authority decided to build a bus center on St. Paul Street between Pearl and Cherry streets. This will be the first indoor transit center for the downtown area with an indoor ticket center and bathrooms. But that means that portion of St. Paul Street will no longer be open to through traffic. It will also remove six trees from the park designed by noted landscape architect Dan Kiley, which has some historic preservationists concerned.

"Burlington has been successful because they've found the right balance between preserving and growing. We think it's a fine line, but we've managed to stay on the right side of that line," said Stephen Carlson of CCTA.

Carlson says they're still in the engineering phase and won't break ground until fall of 2014. They hope to open the center by the fall of 2015. The project is expected to cost $9.6 million.
