MONTPELIER, Vt. -
A fire broke out at a Montpelier restaurant Monday morning.
Fire crews were called at about 6:45 a.m. to McGillicuddy's Irish Pub in the Onion River Sports building. They say the grease fire started around an oven.
Five departments responded. Most of the damage was contained to the oven area and the flames were extinguished quickly.
"It sounds like it was a fire in the kitchen of McGillicuddy's, the pub next door, but it looks like the fire department got it out very quickly," said Andrew Brewer, who owns the building.
"The building does have an alarm system. We actually had two notifications from the alarm system and we also were receiving calls from people walking by at 6:30 in the morning. It is kind of a busy area with joggers, so we got a couple of calls from people walking by," Montpelier Fire Chief Robert Gowans said.
They are still trying to determine how the fire started, but it is not considered suspicious.
The damage to the kitchen will likely leave the pub closed for the day, but nearby stores, including Onion River Sports, plan on opening for the day. No other businesses in the building were damaged.
