MONTPELIER, Vt. -
The American Civil
Liberties Union wants to know more about the use of license plate readers by
Vermont police agencies.
More than 30 state
and local police cruisers are now equipped with special cameras that photograph
the plates of passing cars. Police say the photos go into a computer database
and are used to identify stolen cars or cars being driven by criminal suspects.
The ACLU wants to
know if police are collecting and storing information about drivers not wanted
for a crime. The ACLU says tracking and recording people's movements raises
serious privacy concerns.
