Springfield man denies assault

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. -

Police say he sucker-punched a man in the face, but a 28-year-old Springfield, Vt., man denies the attack. Dennis "D.J." Allen pleaded innocent to aggravated assault charges Monday.

Earlier this month an alleged rival gang member was arrested in connection with a shooting that happened outside Allen's apartment.

The key witness to the shooting, 31-year-old John Johnston, told officers that after the shooting, Allen tried to recruit him to join his gang and when he declined, Allen punched him in the face, which broke his nose and cheekbones.
