Kelly Conquers as Kaat Checks In

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

First baseman Rob Kelly set a new league single season RBI record, but it was enough for Vermont (17-21) as they fell 6-5 to Mystic in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Monday night.

Kelly would begin the scoring for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the first when he singled home Aaron Barbosa, tying the NECBL single season RBI record of 42 set by Effrey Valdez in 2010 for the Lowell All-Americans. In the bottom of the third Kelly singled home Brian O'Grady setting a new league RBI mark.

Former major league Pitcher Jim Kaat threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  Kaat spends his summers in Vermont and spent time with the Mountaineer players before the game.  He spent 23 years in the majors collecting 16 gold gloves along the way.  Retiring Northfield Baseball Coach Frank Pecora caught the ceremonial first pitch.  Pecora and his Marauders were honored for their State Championship victory this past spring.
