BURLINGTON, Vt. -
A young Vermont woman is getting ready to pedal from coast to coast to help fight cancer.
Kate Trono, 25, has been training for her marathon bike ride since October. She and an out-of-state friend who will make the journey with her have raised nearly $9,000 so far. All the proceeds will go to the National Brain Tumor Society to help find a cure.
Trono learned the hard way eight years ago when her own father died of an aggressive brain tumor at the age of 56. Just two years ago one of her closest family friends died of the same thing. The cross-country trip is in their memory.
"I can't really chalk it up to just being a coincidence and I think that's what prompted me to do this trip. It was just why two people I looked up to most could be stricken with this incredibly horrific disease. And there are thousands of people out there," Trono said.
Trono will head to California next week to begin her trek across the country. She expects to arrive back in Burlington by the end of September, where she is an operating room assistant at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
