Storm triggers baby boom in NH

NASHUA, N.H. -

A big storm led to a big boom in babies in New Hampshire.

Nine months ago a nor'easter dumped snow on the Granite State, leaving thousands without power. And now hospitals are seeing more births.

At Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, they've had staff working overtime and have opened up rooms outside the birthing unit to accommodate all the expecting moms. The hospital typically welcomes 20-25 babies into the world each week, but lately, it has been about twice that number.

"We usually see a little spike up in July because the winter season is starting, but this year it seemed just a little bit more," said Carol McIntyre, a registered nurse.

But that isn't the only jump hospitals on the East Coast are seeing this year. Some as far south as New Jersey say they also saw an increase back in April and May-- nine months after Tropical Storm Irene.
