GRAND ISLE, Vt. -
A new report shows keeping pollutants at bay on Lake Champlain has been tough.
Findings released by the Lake Champlain Basin Program show phosphorus levels in many areas of the lake are rising. Phosophorus helps weeds and algae grow, making boating tough in some areas.
But mercury levels in lake trout and other fish are down, and programs to curb cormorant nesting are working, cutting the population in half.
But, the report shows invasive species are still on the rise. Fifty already live in the lake, and another 130 or more are expected to pop up in the near future.
