COTS searches for new daystation

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Committee on Temporary Shelter is looking for a new daystation following Fourth of July flooding.

COTS says it will not reopen the damaged shelter in the basement on the corner of King Street and South Winooski Avenue because flood insurance will not cover any of the damage. Flooding ruined furniture, washing machines and computers. Roughly 50-60 clients drop in to the Daystation each day.

COTS is currently offering limited day-time services in another portion of the building, while employees scout out possible new locations for the shelter.

"We were looking at a site last week and somebody else put an offer in and beat us to the punch because we didn't have the resources ready to move. We are also trying to do some fundraising to be in a position where we can move quickly when we identify the site that is going to be the new home," said Rita Markley of COTS.

Markley says the goal is to keep the new location within walking distance from their other locations in Burlington.
