BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Vermont health officials hope they've cooked up a more appealing treat for raccoons.
The 16th annual rabies bait drop starts next week, with vaccine-laced morsels dropped from the air and by crews on the ground. The idea is to prevent rabies from spreading from the animal population in Vermont-- north into Canada.
Up until this year the baits have been made with fishmeal. Now, officials are trying a new formula with a sweet scent.
They warn that people should not touch the baits. They suggest wearing a glove or covering your hand with a plastic bag if you need to move one.
