Vermont to remove Winooski River dam in Marshfield

Posted: Updated:

MARSHFIELD, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Natural Resources says crews are going to remove a small dam from the Winooski River in Marshfield as a way to encourage the movement of trout and other aquatic species.

Officials say the concrete dam near Marshfield village was completed in 1965 and that it no longer serves a useful purpose.

The removal of the dam will restore the river's continuity between Plainfield and Lower Cabot and eliminate any risk to public safety posed by the deteriorating structure.

Work in the river will take place the week of Aug. 13, with the removal scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 20. The project should be completed by mid-September.

Officials caution that the weather could change the schedule.
