Andrew Morrison bikes to work whenever he can. Fitting-- considering he works at the West Hill Bike Shop in Putney.
"I like that it slows me down. It is a lot easier to enjoy the road and see what is between point A and point B on a bicycle," Morrison said.
This seasoned rider admits that safety is always a concern.
"Vermont has a lot of really great cycling, but some of the roads are kind of scary at times to ride upon and I think that intimidates a lot of cyclists," Morrison said.
The dangers were highlighted over the weekend when a cyclist collided with a car in Dummerston. The driver apparently did not see the rider and pulled out in front of him, sending the biker to the hospital with multiple broken bones.
But the Windham Regional Commission has a road map, if you will, for bike safety in the southeast part of the state.
"We tend to highlight those roads that serve more as connections from town to town or that provide, in some cases, some nice, really scenic, quiet road," said Jeff Nugent of the Windham Regional Commission.
The map also points out high traffic, danger like cracked pavement, and even stores where travelers can pick up needed supplies. The goal of the map is to increase safety and get more people involved in the sport.
"Downtown Brattleboro itself is kind of notoriously scary for biking through, but you get a couple miles out of town and we have had a number of roads that have been repaved in the last couple of years that are really great for cycling," Nugent said.
Shoppers at the Brattleboro Bicycle Shop take a peek before heading on their way.
"It is great," said Barbara Walsh of the Brattleboro Bicycle Shop. "It is really nice for cyclists to be able to come in here and see what roads have wider shoulders or are more bike-friendly and see which ones that we have to be a little more concerned about."
"If people knew what to expect or they knew which roads were nicer than others, it could help concentrate where cyclists are riding and that also gives motorists an idea of where to be looking for bicyclists," Morrison said.
