CLAREMONT, N.H. -
Fire officials are warning about the potential hazard of propane tanks.
According to the New Hampshire state fire marshal, tanks that are not properly grounded can catch fire during a lightning storm.
Officials say over the last several years, there have been multiple cases where fires have started because a gas line was not installed properly.
"As a new issue comes up that may be hazardous to a homeowner or business owner, we like to get that information out to the public so they can be pro-active rather than looking at a statistic after the fire has occurred," Claremont Fire Chief Richard Bergeron said.
Fire officials say the gas lines can also be compromised by human error. They recommend people call their propane company or a licensed electrician to make sure the lines are grounded and working properly
