SUDBURY, Vt. -
A Sudbury man suffered burns to his face, head, mouth and neck after his car caught on fire while he was driving home along Route 30 Tuesday evening.
The flames entered into the cab of 59-year-old Phillip Russell's truck from under the dashboard.
Russell leapt from the moving vehicle in an effort to avoid being severely burned. His truck and its accompanying trailer stopped a short distance away.
Russell was able to let his horses out of the trailer before collapsing nearby. He was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital with burns and a head injury.
The cause of the fire is not known.
