Alcoa expansion hinges on river cleanup

MASSENA, N.Y. -

A New York senator is calling for a river cleanup that could allow the North Country's largest private employer to expand.

Sen. Chuck Schumer will urge federal officials to fast-track approval of a plan to clean up the Grasse River.

The cleanup would remove pollutants that accumulated from Alcoa's manufacturing activities.

That could allow a $600 million investment in the Massena plant to move forward.

Schumer says that could allow more jobs to flow into the North Country.

One of the plans on the table puts the cleanup cost at about $200 million.
