MANCHESTER, Vt. -
Since the Northshire Bookstore first opened in 1976, Vermont's largest independent bookseller has undergone a move, additions, and renovations. But for the first time in its history it's about to start a new chapter in New York.
"We've looked for opportunities over the years and it's never quite felt right, but Saratoga Springs is an amazing opportunity," said Chris Morrow, the co-owner of Northshire.
Morrow says they're still looking to secure a location in Saratoga, but believes a second book shop will fit right in with a community known for thoroughbred racing and headline grabbing musical performances.
"I think it's a town that can support a good independent bookstore," Morrow said.
"I think that's terrific. I hope it's not going to change the bookstore here," customer Jeremy Oberle said. "It's got a particular personality and I like that it's part of Vermont."
Longtime customers say they'll travel from near and far to Manchester because of the store's charm, as well as its knowledgeable staff.
Many who live in the Saratoga area already frequent the Vermont shop, like John Sierzega of Albany who spent a portion of Thursday afternoon browsing the children's section with his grandkids.
"I think it would be good for Saratoga to have a bookstore of the stature of Northshire. It has a lot to offer, I'm sure people would be happy with it," Sierzega said.
"We will look to replicate a lot of what's been successful here," Morrow said.
One may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a book store by its customer reviews.
Morrow says they hope to open the new shop in Saratoga in the first quarter of next year.
