State needs more donations for Irene victims

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

While the state is sorting out how to pay for Irene so are Vermonters.

The Irene Fundraising Chair says in the last few weeks 700 families have come looking for help. To meet demand there needs to be 6 million dollars raised from individuals. The fund helps people after FEMA and insurance said no. It so far has handed out $2 million dollars to 128 families.

To raise money officials are encouraging people to donate and also buy "I am Vermont Strong" license plates.

"We really are Vermonters and we take care of Vermonters that's what it's all about and we know we have 700 families this recovery is not a 1 or 2 year process," said chairman David Coates.

Governor Shumlin says despite the need - he still does not think it's a good idea to take that money from the state budget - and he thinks Vermonters will step up to help.
