NORTHFIELD, Vt. -
A new exhibit at Norwich University showcases rare Civil War artifacts from the schools archives.
The exhibit titled "1861 to 1862: Toward a Higher Moral Purpose" is the second in what will be a five-part series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the war. On display-- a six-pounder cannon given to the university in the 1850s to train soldiers. Also featured are the stories of Norwich alumni who fought in famous skirmishes-- often on opposing sides.
"As one of the only military academies in the north it sort of played a central role in training, especially junior officers for the Civil War. So you have so many alumni of Norwich that served in the war, there's kind of a rich group of stories to choose from," said Phil Whitman of the Sullivan Museum & History Center at Norwich University.
The exhibit is on display through April at the Sullivan Museum & History Center at Norwich University. Click here for more information.
