BURLINGTON, Vt. -
With the Republican presidential ticket now chosen, Medicare and Social Security are under the spotlight.
Mitt Romney picked Congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate. Last year Ryan proposed an overhaul of Medicare. President Obama is doing the same and points out that he and Ryan both proposed billions in cuts.
The AARP says that's a major concern for Vermont's aging population. There are over 90,000 people who count on Social Security and Medicare in the state, making up a significant portion of their income.
"On the Social Security side it accounts for $14,000 a year in benefits, but that makes up close to 60 percent of the average senior's income, so it is a substantial portion of their ability to live and pay bills and live their daily lives," said John Hishta of AARP.
AARP has information on what could happen to both Medicare and Social Security on its website. Click here for more.
